Bill Strachan


Bill Strachan is the President of Brown & Brown of Virginia and oversees the DC Metro, Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Warwick, RI offices. He is responsible for the overall growth and performance of all business units throughout Virginia, including Commercial Lines, Employee Benefits, and Personal Lines. Bill’s previous firm, Johnson & Strachan Insurance, was acquired by the Brown & Brown team of companies in 2012. Bill and his leadership group have successfully integrated several teams brought together through acquisition and organic growth, developing the Virginia offices into one of the leading brokerage firms in the Mid-Atlantic.

Bill graduated from Grove City College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Finance. His professional designations include Certified Insurance Consultant (CIC) and Voluntary Benefit Specialist (VBS). Outside of the office, Bill’s interests include volunteering at Park Valley Church, fitness, and spending time on the golf course. He is the proud father of Sarah (23) and Will (21).

Jeff Kerxton

Executive Vice President - Commercial Sales Team Leader

Jeff is currently handling the dual roles of Executive Vice President and Commercial Sales Team Leader at Brown & Brown of Virginia, out of the DC Metro office. He leads the Commercial Lines team for all of Virginia and is responsible for the overall growth and performance of the Commercial Lines Program. Jeff comes to Brown & Brown through an acquisition of his family-owned business, the Kerxton Insurance Agency, in 2018. Jeff served as CEO for Kerxton Insurance and was instrumental in growing the Agency to become one of the largest privately owned insurance agencies in the Washington DC Metropolitan Region.

Jeff started in the insurance industry in 1983 after graduating from Northern Virginia Community College. He earned his Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) license in 2000 and holds his Property & Casualty and Life & Health licenses in Virginia as well as multiple other states.

Jeff previously served as the President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Northern Virginia. He is also a past board member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia. His current recognitions for Best-in-Class Insurance Agency include Hartford VIP Agency and Cincinnati Insurance Company’s President’s Club.

Jeff has been active in his local Prince William County community and has served on the Board of the Virginia Soccer Association.

Nick Yates

Vice President - Employee Benefit Sales Team Leader

Nick is currently handling the roles of Vice President and Employee Benefits Sales Leader and is responsible for the overall new business organic growth of the Employee Benefits department for the state of Virginia.

Nick joined Brown & Brown of Virginia in August of 2014 and used his prior sales and project management experience to quickly accelerate his career in the insurance industry. In his time with Brown & Brown, Nick has been able to quickly grow his book of business and has been awarded several national honors within the company. Nick is an expert in Self-Funding Medical Insurance and has brought many new and innovative ideas to the Virginia region.

Nick attended Shenandoah University and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the accredited Harry F. Byrd School of Business. He is an avid outdoorsman, enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf at a competitive level.

David McIlravy

Senior Vice President

David started his career as an Ocean Marine Underwriter with Travelers in 2004 in Chicago, IL. In the spring of 2006, David decided to jump to the broker side and became a Producer at Brown & Brown Flagship in Norfolk, VA. In 2010, David was promoted to Marine Team Leader, eventually working his way up to Profit Center Leader of the Norfolk office.

Today, with responsibilities as Executive Vice President and Marine Team Leader, David proudly oversees Brown & Brown’s Norfolk branch, which also consists of two satellite offices, WBR located in Virginia Beach, VA and Ocean Marine Insurance Agency, located in Warwick, RI. The combined agency of nearly 50 employees and $10 million in revenue specializes in offering insurance products to the middle market with expertise in property and casualty, ocean marine, personal lines, and employee benefits services.

David attended Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, VA and graduated from The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, in 2004. Upon earning his Bachelor of Science and USCG Third Mate Unlimited License, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve until receiving an honorable discharge in 2012.
